And Upholster provides step by step tutoring on how to restore upholstered furniture to its former glory while gaining skills relating to furniture repair.  Andupholsrer's philosophy is to reutilise and upcycle all pieces of furniture.  Courses are open to all members of the public irrespective of your current skills and abilities as these will be developed over time.  The skills you will aquire are traditional upholstery techniques which enables the participants to move on with ease to modern techniques.  You will learn furniture restoration techniques guided by our qualified tutor, holder of a TDLB D32 and D33 qualification who has more than 40 years experience in this area which includes 19 years teaching.

Courses run on a regular basis throughout the year in our well equipped workshop in the Jewellry Quarter in th centre of Birmingham.  Tools are provided along with tea and coffee and are 3 hours in duration. Some materials are included in the cost of the course.we also have the facilities to stock your project. we also have a selection of armchairs for sale, French antique armchairs, "art nouveau" chairs and more all to be found on the best buy page  Courses currently run on the following days:-

Monday afternoon from 1.30 to 4.30 pm

Tuesday morning from 9.45 am to 12.45pm

Wednesday evening from 5.30 to 8.30 pm

These run every week of the year.  There is a weekend course (of 12 hours) once a month and dates are announced in advance with the next one taking place 27/28th October, 1st/2nd December, 26th/27th January 2019, 9/10 February 2019 and 23/24 March 2019.
From time to time, depending upon demand, a 20 hour course between Monday and Thursday takes place.  The next course is taking place 19th to 22nd November and 14th to 17th January 2019.
Once a year, for the more adventurous amongst us, there is an 18 hour course running on a Dutch Barge, 50 kilometeres south of Brussels on the Meuze river with accommodation in a bed and breakfast.  Hosts Mieke and George are the most welcoming hosts you could wish to meet and organise a Belgian evening on the last night of your stay.  Included in the cost is a guided visit to Brussel's well known flea market, a visit to a micro brewery in the Ardennes Mountains where you can taste their amazing beers (not for the weak hearted) and we also go to one of the top ten most attractive villages in Belgium, Cuperet and visit a mystical grotto created in the 1900's.  The next trip will be in 2018.

Chair Caning Workshop

Our last chair caning workshop tookplace on the 25th May at our Upholstery workshop and was a GREAT success.  Participants were treated to a hot traditional French lunch prepared by a friend of the course tutor.  This included:-

Starter (incorporates an appeitif (a glass of bubbly) accompanied with canopies of Taponade followed by Pate and Rillettes (fait maison) accomapnied with a salade du jardin.

Main Course

Poulet basquaise including vegetables from Provence.


Charlotte aux fraise.

Cote du Rhone/Madiran will accompany the meal.

Due to the great success we are looking to repeat the event.  Look back for an update once a date has been finalised.

Weekend Workshop- 8th/9th April 2017

Another very busy weekend completed where everyone was very contented with their efforts.  A new strater could not believe the work involved in reupholstering a wing chair.  A very pleasant weekend.  New dates have been released for 29th/30th July 2017 which also coincides with the Jewellery Quarter Open Workshops Weekend which allows members of the public to visit the workshops and look at the labours of love being undertaken.

And Upholster also organises specific workshops relating to topical crafts.  For example The Big Bed Head Weekend, more dates will be announced in the near future.  Another of our themed workshops is Lampshade Making and also a Fitted Loose Cover Workshop.  We do invite guest tutors on a regular basis who stage sessions in their art to include stained glass, interior design and patchwork.

Reactualisation (upcycling)

And Upholster has a spciality of recycling throw aways, items which most people would discard.  We reinvent the discarded two seater sofa into a luxurious chaise longue.

Fab Foam Frenzy -

Join us in our workshop and discover modern foam upholstery techniques.

The aim is that at the end of the 12 hour weekend course your project will be finished or well on its way.  Included in the cost for the weekend is all materials except the foam required for your project.
